The website of the Outer Hebrides Tourism Alliance extols the virtues of walking in the Outer Hebrides.

If you are thinking of taking a walking holiday in the Outer Hebrides you will really be spoiled for choice when it comes to hiking trails in the Western Isles.

Fans of the outdoors will find that Outer Hebrides walking breaks offer great opportunities to explore the unique identity of these Scottish islands, with walks in the Western Isles providing visitors with the chance to get close to the nature, environment, history and heritage of our islands.

Travellers choosing to go hiking in the Outer Hebrides can choose from a wide range of walking routes in the Western Isles – each of which offers its own insight in the isles.

Choose coastal walks around the Outer Hebrides to understand the isolation of these island communities, or opt for Western Isles wildlife walks, such as hiking through the Hebrides nature reserves or walks to spot eagles, deer and other exciting island inhabitants.

History lovers can choose to walk the Bonnie Prince Charlie trail in whole or part, following in the footsteps of the young pretender who sought shelter here on our islands, while a selection of Outer Hebrides hiking trails take in historic sites and monuments providing ample points of interest along the way.

Whether you are looking for leisurely strolls along island beaches, or challenging hikes through rugged mountain terrain, walking on Lewis, Harris, Berneray, North Uist, Grimsay, Benbecula, South Uist, Eriskay, Barra and Vatersay offers a chance to really connect with the spirit of the islands.

Choose to plan an independent walking trip to the Western Isles, or make use of one of the Outer Hebrides walking guides offering accompanied walks and tours on our islands.

We also have six walking leaflets which you can download for Callanish, Great Bernera, Rhenigidale, Scalpay, Berneray and Eriskay walks.

Leaflets

The Berneray leaflet can be downloaded from here and the Rhenigidale leaflet can be downloaded from here.

The Gatliff Trust published booklet on Walks from Rhenigidale by Neil Pinkett is described on this webpage.

Information on the Hebridean Way – a walking route through the Hebrides is available here.

The Walk Highlands website contains tens of walks in the Outer Hebrides. An introduction to this archive of walks is provided on a page of our website.

The Scottish Rights of Way and Access Society maintains a list of Heritage Paths across Scotland. The Outer Hebrides section on Heritage Paths contains paths that pass beside the hostels at Howmore and Rhenigidale. The path by Howmore is called The Machair Path and is 35 km long extending almost the length of South Uist from the South Ford to Kilpheder. The Heritage Path to Rhenigidale is the Postmans Path from Urgha.
