Staying at Berneray, Howmore or Rhenigidale Hostels in the Outer Hebrides

We run three hostels in the islands, at Berneray (21 beds), Howmore (16 beds) and Rhenigidale (12 beds).

We take no bookings so cannot predict availability. However, no-one is turned away.

The hostels are open every day of the year. The doors never close.

When you arrive at the hostel just claim a bed by making it up and the bed is yours for the duration of your stay. We charge £16 per person per night. (Under 18 £8 per night) All sleeping accommodation is in dormitory rooms. Our hostels are designed to cater for individual independent travellers.

Many at our hostellers are walkers and cyclists. We have no specific family accommodation or private rooms and no facilities for young children or babies.   We expect hostellers up to the age of 18 to be accompanied by an adult or someone over the age of 18 who is responsible for their welfare.

Camping is possible at each of the hostels within the hostel grounds. (Two or three person size tents.) We charge £10 per person per night for hostellers who choose to camp (Under 18 £5 per night) but this gives access to all the hostel facilities, kitchen, common room, showers and toilets.

We provide no pitches for camper vans. We can only give you permission to camp on our land. Much of the land surrounding our hostels is croft land which does not belong to the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust. If you are camping elsewhere than on the hostel site and use the facilities at our hostels then it is necessary to pay the camping fee as set out above. Those who do not wish to pay our fees are asked not to use the hostel as this is unfair on the majority who are more than willing to pay. We are a voluntary organisation and have to meet all the costs of running and maintaining the hostels, some of which (e.g. electricity and maintenance) are high.

If you planning to bring a group of walkers or cyclists to our hostel please bear in mind that all our hostels are small. We cannot accommodate large parties Groups up to five people are acceptable but groups are asked to have consideration for the needs of individual hostellers.

We accept payments in cash and by cheque. We do not have the ability to accept payments by credit or debit card.

For practical reasons we ask hostellers with dogs not to allow them into the hostel. All hostels have a fully equipped communal kitchen and eating facilities for self-catering.  There is a fridge and microwave.  All sleeping accommodation is in shared rooms. If you have a vehicle please leave your dog in your vehicle. The only exceptions are assistance dogs.

All beds are provided with duvets, a mattress cover and pillows but you will need a sleeping bag. You may use your own, either linen or quilted. Alternatively you may hire a sleeping bag at the hostel for £2. We are not providing a camp site per se. Hostellers can camp if they so wish. We provide no pitches for camper vans.
