Rhenigidale is east of Tarbet on the rugged east coast of Harris. It can be approached from the north east by road (13 miles from Tarbet), or on foot (6 miles from Tarbet). The footpath is unsuitable for cycles. Walkers should not attempt the track after dark. Accordingly leave sufficient time to complete the track before sunset. At least two hours walking time should be allowed, more if you are unsure of the way or are an inexperienced walker.
Toddun(1782ft) stands adjacent to the village. Molinginish, deserted village, 3 miles. Loch Seaforth also adjacent to village. Golden Eagles. |

How to find Rhenigidale Hostel
|

Rhenigidale Hostel, the first and therefore longest serving hostel operated by Hebridean Hostellers. The hostel was wardened from its openin in 1962 until his death by Roddy McInnes. Roddy was a character, described as irrepressable, indominatable; a few words, a few minutes for every hosteller; and unchanging. Sadly death did bring change - but Roddy would have approved. On 20th February 1990, the road to Rhenigadale arrived, 8km of tarmac winding over the watershed from a road junction at Maaruig on te Stornoway road. Rodd had been a leading campaigner for the road. However the footpath from the Tarbert - Kyles Scalpay raod is still maintained and is one of the finest walksi in Britain. In 1987 the Trust became owners of Rhenigadale and in 1990 the hostel reopened after major repairs and improvements. Alasdair Mackay now wardens the hostel. |
