Enjoying Rhenigidale – a Nine Minute video

Julian Paren has created a companion video to The Leaving of Berneray. This time the music is Athchuinge sung by the Dingwall Gaelic Choir.

The video introduces Rhenigidale and the surrounding area, and then treads further afield to the west coast of Harris and the challenging mountains of the North Harris Forest.

The musical section takes you on the walk from Rhenigidale to Molinginish and back down the zigzags before climbing Toddun, the mountain that dominates the village of Rhenigidale.

Athchuinge is a Gaelic prayer that asks for God’s blessing on the land and protection of its people.

Athchuinge

O Righ nan dùl ʼs nam feart tha shuas
Do bheannachd gràsmhor dòirt a nuas,
Le ’r tìr ʼs le ʼr teangaidh soirbheich fhein
ʼS biodh clann nan Gaidheal fo sgàil do sgèith

Prayer of Petition

O Lord of the universe and of the hosts above
Pour down your gracious blessings,
With success for our own land and language
And may the children of the Gael be sheltered under your wing
