When you are staying at Howmore, you need to be conscious that the village shop closed … over a year ago. Two Co-operative Stores are available, handily placed to the north and south, but a drive away. Their opening hours are extensive – from 7.00 – 22.00 on Mondays to Saturdays and from 12.30 – 22.00 on Sundays – and they are to be found at Creagorry, on the south side of Benbecula, and at Daliburgh in South Uist. They are in settlements on the coastal plain and these images convey that sense of wide landscapes and big skies.

The Creagorry photograph comes from the gallery of Alan Rolfe’s work Images by Alan. The view of Daliburgh, a small village with a large school, was taken by Greg Morss and appears in the geograph.org.uk series that covers the country.
